After 4 minutes, Argider Carreira mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Utebo and the Ponferradina players grew even worse after the yellow card. 3 minutes into the game, one of Utebo:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. Ponferradina's Lalo Vives played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cirilo Benito in the 8th minute of play. Juan-Luis Carreira made a fantastic save in the 10th minute, when Ariando Domenech sent off a good shot on target. Garcilaso Valverde charged in rather forcefully in the 11th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Garcilaso Valverde the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of Ponferradina booed when Utebo was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 11 match minutes in a wonderful position. Garcilaso Valverde didn't get a good kick on the ball. Juan-Luis Carreira made a fantastic save in the 15th minute, when Goyo Rosario sent off a good shot on target. Lalo Vives took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Laureano Campoamor, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 24 minutes into the match, Herminio Portillo had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Juan-Luis Carreira. Utebo's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Herminio Portillo was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-0. When Lope Cacheres fell near the penalty area in the 36th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Utebo's protests and gave Lope Cacheres a yellow card for diving instead. The audience was convinced that Goyo Rosario's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Juan-Luis Carreira was relentless in the 39th minute of the game. 42 minutes into the game, Jose-Juan Quintero cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 2-2. Lalo Vives was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in.

The audience thought a goal was coming when Jose-Juan Quintero got free with Lalo Vives in the 53rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The crowd rose to their feet as Utebo's Jose-Juan Quintero slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Lalo Vives. That made the score 2-3 after 54 minutes of play. Juan-Luis Carreira showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ariando Domenech, who was totally free with the ball in the 57th minute. Lalo Vives made a fantastic save in the 59th minute, when Cirilo Benito sent off a good shot on target. After having played for 63 minutes, Ariando Domenech managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ponferradina's supporters crossed their fingers, but Ariando Domenech was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Juan-Luis Carreira didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Herminio Portillo went, in the 64th minute, to the upper right corner, 3-3 was the resulting score. If Edgardo Rey had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 70th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Juan-Luis Carreira made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Herminio Portillo in the 74th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Edgardo Rey in the 77th minute of play forced Ponferradina's goalkeeper Lalo Vives to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Ponferradina's Lalo Vives proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 82nd minute of the match, managed to save Ponferradina from getting a goal against them. Lalo Vives showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Edgardo Rey in the 85th minute of the match. In the 87th minute Herminio Portillo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Juan-Luis Carreira saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. When Ariando Domenech came up free with the goalie in the 88th minute, the Ponferradina fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ariando Domenech couldn't finish the play. In the 97th minute Herminio Portillo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Juan-Luis Carreira saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Utebo eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
