Schalke's Toni Wentzel tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. After a defensive mix-up in Schalke's zone, Maciej Zurawski stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Toni Wentzel came out of the goal and Maciej Zurawski tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 10 minutes into the match, Menke's Maciej Zurawski sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Toni Wentzel narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Toni Wentzel didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Maciej Zurawski went, in the 16th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-2 was the resulting score. If Maciej Zurawski had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 20th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. If Adil Lauf had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 22nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 25th minute, Adil Lauf fired away a shot on goal. He put a little to much spin on the ball and sent it just wide of the right post. Maciej Zurawski received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 27th minute. Toni Wentzel tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Toni Wentzel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Maciej Zurawski in the 32nd minute of play. Toni Wentzel showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Miroslav Garbe in the 42nd minute of the match. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-3 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Adil Lauf stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The supporters of Schalke booed when Menke was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 51 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ernst Bauer didn't get a good kick on the ball. Niklas Kronig hit a great freekick 53 minutes into the match. Maciej Zurawskis short, quick shot in the 57thth minute got Toni Wentzel to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. 0-4 became the score in the 60th minute when Maciej Zurawski elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. Miroslav Garbe fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Toni Wentzel having to interfere. After 66 played minutes Menke got a freekick which was hit by Artur Fontes. Ole Defeu showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Adil Lauf in the 75th minute of the match. Adil Lauf received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 77th minute. Ole Defeu tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Schalke's Toni Wentzel played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Miroslav Garbe in the 85th minute of play. Menke's Miroslav Garbe got a good chance for a goal in the 87th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Amílcar Delgado fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Toni Wentzel having to interfere. When the final whistle sounded Menke left the ground with the victory after a much better performance than Schalke.
