Cem Zweigler fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 4th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Raphael Gewalt having to interfere. After 10 played minutes Inter Essen got a freekick which was hit by Herbert Frick. Dietrich Nievelstein, 11 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Cem Zweigler's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 14thth minute, Raphael Gewalt skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Bodo Pröger took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ashley Fischer, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. If Ashley Fischer had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 19th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 22nd minute, Simon Brodbeck hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Cem Zweigler received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 23rd minute. Raphael Gewalt tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Raphael Gewalt showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Leander Holthoff in the 25th minute of the match. Herbert Frick kicked well hit freekick during the 28th minute of the match. After recieving a nice pass, Borussia Dortmund's Dietrich Nievelstein tried to score from far away in the 29th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. In the 30th match minute, Inter Essen was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Arthur Gaudlitz to maneuver through the defense. 31 minutes into the game, Armin Falke was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Inter Essen's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Borussia Dortmund the free kick. A collision led to Inter Essen getting a freekick after 32 minutes play. Armin Falke hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ashley Fischer in the 33rd minute of play forced Inter Essen's goalkeeper Bodo Pröger to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When the match had gone on for 34 minutes, Herbert Frick took a quick shot and it went in 1-0 without a chance for Raphael Gewalt to make any attempt to save it. 37 minutes into the match, Inter Essen's Cem Zweigler sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Raphael Gewalt narrowly saved just below the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 39th minute, Ashley Fischer managed to get in a good position for a shot. Borussia Dortmund's supporters rose to their feet, but Ashley Fischer was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Bodo Pröger breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 40thth minute of the game Kaspar Grünewald who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Inter Essen's Bodo Pröger was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Kaspar Grünewald made a kick off. Leander Holthoff received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 51st minute. Raphael Gewalt tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Borussia Dortmund's Kaspar Grünewald got a good chance for a goal in the 53rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Bodo Pröger showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Kaspar Grünewald, who was totally free with the ball in the 55th minute. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Herbert Frick during the 56th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 60 played minutes Inter Essen got a freekick which was hit by Herbert Frick. The audience thought a goal was coming when Ashley Fischer got free with Bodo Pröger in the 65th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Kaspar Grünewald sent away a hard shot on goal in the 67th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 70thth minute of the game Armin Falke who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Borussia Dortmund's Raphael Gewalt was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Adi Bohmann kicked well hit freekick during the 70th minute of the match. Ashley Fischer's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Bodo Pröger firmly grabbed it by the left post. A collision led to Borussia Dortmund getting a freekick after 75 minutes play. Matthias Reinhart hit a great ball. Borussia Dortmund's Ashley Fischer got a good chance for a goal in the 78th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 83rdth minute of the game Kaspar Grünewald who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Inter Essen's Bodo Pröger was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After a rather tough play, Inter Essen's Herbert Frick got a free kick in the 84th minute. Herbert Frick hit a great freekick 93 minutes into the match. Inter Essen's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
