When Elvis Freese came up free with the goalie in the 9th minute, the 1.FC Union Berlin fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Elvis Freese couldn't finish the play. Elvis Freese sent away a hard shot on goal in the 11th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Siegmund Splett was out of position in the 13 minute of play, and Heiko Hennicke capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Heiko Hennicke really showed his touch with that goal: 1-0. Borussia Mönchengladbach's Philipp Wendland played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Elvis Freese in the 18th minute of play. 1.FC Union Berlin's Elvis Freese got a good chance for a goal in the 25th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 30th minute, Siegfried Gauderer sent off a long shot on goal, but the shot was nowhere near the goal and 1.FC Union Berlin's Siegmund Splett didn't even have to move. When 1.FC Union Berlin's Andreas von Gartzen in the 33rd minute got a chance for a shot 33rd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Borussia Mönchengladbach's goalie prevented a goal. Philipp Wendland came out of the goal in the 35th minute to try and stop a shot by 1.FC Union Berlin's Andreas von Gartzen. But to his dismay, Andreas von Gartzen quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. After some careless play in the Borussia Mönchengladbach defense, Andreas von Gartzen kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Philipp Wendland. The Borussia Mönchengladbach fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Philipp Wendland should have stopped the shot. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 1-2 lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Elvis Freese to make the kick off. 51 minutes into the game, Elvis Freese recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Philipp Wendland. Elvis Freese showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-3. 56 minutes into the match, Borussia Mönchengladbach's goalkeeper Philipp Wendland had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Andreas von Gartzen. With his leg Philipp Wendland managed to avoid a goal in the 59thth minute, when 1.FC Union Berlin's Andreas von Gartzen fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. In the 67th minute, Andreas von Gartzen got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 74th minute, Elvis Freese got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. If Heiko Hennicke had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 77th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Gerd Trumpf fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 79th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Siegmund Splett having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in Borussia Mönchengladbach's zone, Elvis Freese stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Philipp Wendland came out of the goal and Elvis Freese tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The Borussia Mönchengladbach fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. 1.FC Union Berlin were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
