In the 20thth minute of the game Oswald Pless who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but FC Schalke04's Niklas Gutsche was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. When Lars Lütke came up free with the goalie in the 23rd minute, the FC Schalke04 fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Lars Lütke couldn't finish the play. Adidas SV's Achim Uhrig played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Julien Miller in the 36th minute of play. If Julien Miller had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Niklas Gutsche showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Oswald Pless, who was totally free with the ball in the 47th minute. After the first half FC Schalke04 were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The audience was convinced that Julien Miller's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Achim Uhrig was relentless in the 51st minute of the game. Achim Uhrig made an important save on a dangerous shot by Lars Lütke in the 55th minute.
