The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Ingolf Klumpp kicked well hit freekick during the 9th minute of the match. Rainer Innerwinkler struck a weak shot in the 10th minute. Henning Rennicke didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the 13th minute Mark Behling shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Henning Rennicke saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 14th minute, Boris Surkemper hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 19 minutes into the match, Borussia Mönchengladbach's goalkeeper Jörg Gabriel had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Nikolaos Lackmann. Nikolaos Lackmann kicked well hit freekick during the 24th minute of the match. In the 28th minute, Villingen-Schweninngen SV's Boris Surkemper ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Jörg Gabriel. Jörg Gabriel yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-0. The supporters of Borussia Mönchengladbach booed when Villingen-Schweninngen SV was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 32 match minutes in a wonderful position. Paul Uhrig didn't get a good kick on the ball. Borussia Mönchengladbach's Rainer Innerwinkler got a good chance for a goal in the 33rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Jörg Gabriel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Erk Grytz in the 36th minute of play. The supporters of Villingen-Schweninngen SV booed when Borussia Mönchengladbach was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 37 match minutes in a wonderful position. Rüdiger von Bülow didn't get a good kick on the ball. Villingen-Schweninngen SV's Niccolo Hauffen couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to, so he shot a long shot towards the goal in the 37th minute. The shot went wide which resulted in a goal kick for Borussia Mönchengladbach. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Mark Behling stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Henning Rennicke made an important save on a dangerous shot by Mark Behling in the 52nd minute. Boris Surkemper kicked well hit freekick during the 55th minute of the match. Jörg Gabriel came out of the goal in the 59th minute to try and stop a shot by Villingen-Schweninngen SV's Erk Grytz. But to his dismay, Erk Grytz quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-0. Erk Grytz scored 3-0 in the 63rd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Jörg Gabriel, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Mark Behling sent away a hard shot on goal in the 66th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Mark Behling in the 69th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Henning Rennicke prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Mark Behling's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Henning Rennicke read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 77th minute of play. A collision led to Villingen-Schweninngen SV getting a freekick after 81 minutes play. Erk Grytz hit a great ball. Mark Behling received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 83rd minute. Henning Rennicke tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 87 minutes into the match, Borussia Mönchengladbach's goal looked a bit too open when Erk Grytz came free, but Jörg Gabriel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 89 minutes into the game, Villingen-Schweninngen SV's Erk Grytz nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Jörg Gabriel made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-1. After 95 played minutes Villingen-Schweninngen SV got a freekick which was hit by Paul Uhrig. The home crowd let out a huge roar when the referee blew for the end of the game. Villingen-Schweninngen SV were victorious despite being under pressure from Borussia Mönchengladbach for much of the match.
