Oberhausen's supporters crossed their fingers, but Per Stiig Barges was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Per Stiig Barges received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 18th minute. Johann Liebich tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Johann Liebich showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Ulrich Pfister in the 23rd minute of the match. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Ulrich Pfister during the 24th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Per Stiig Barges sent away a hard shot on goal in the 29th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Johann Liebich stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ulrich Pfister's shot from short distance in the 36th minute. Johann Liebich showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Per Stiig Barges, who was totally free with the ball in the 38th minute. If Per Stiig Barges had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. A collision led to Oberhausen getting a freekick after 41 minutes play. Steen Ehrreich hit a great ball. Eitel von Fallersleben might have been able to make a better finish in the 48th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Oliver Greif. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Eitel von Fallersleben ran back to his position shaking his head. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Per Stiig Barges couldn't finish the play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Ulrich Pfister got free with Johann Liebich in the 56th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Ulrich Pfister recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 63rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Per Stiig Barges fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 65th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Johann Liebich having to interfere. Joachim Mahne sent away a hard shot on goal in the 70th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Eitel von Fallersleben came up free with the goalie in the 72nd minute, the barsa01 fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Eitel von Fallersleben couldn't finish the play. When Johannes Knoll fell near the penalty area in the 72nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick.
