Olaf Sellmann made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ricky Dörnbrack in the 11th minute of play. 13 minutes into the game, Hugo Orlowski was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Bayern's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Borussia Dortmund the free kick. A collision led to Bayern getting a freekick after 13 minutes play. Hugo Orlowski hit a great ball. In the 14th minute, Farin Christner hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 1-0 became the score in the 17th minute when Hinrik Diening elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Baldur Grath in the 20th minute of play forced Bayern's goalkeeper Olaf Sellmann to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 25 minutes into the match, Bayern's Iker Melkis sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Sergio Wenauer narrowly saved just below the crossbar. After a rather tough play, Borussia Dortmund's Oskar Behning got a free kick in the 30th minute. Hinrik Diening sent away a hard shot on goal in the 32nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 33rd minute, Iker Melkis got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After having played for 45 minutes, Hinrik Diening managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Bayern's supporters crossed their fingers, but Hinrik Diening was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

After 51 played minutes Borussia Dortmund got a freekick which was hit by Farin Christner. In the 54th minute Iker Melkis shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sergio Wenauer saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Sergio Wenauer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Iker Melkis in the 66th minute of play. Roland Mauthe's late challenge caught a Bayern's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Roland Mauthe helped the player get up and apologised. Roland Mauthe kicked well hit freekick during the 69th minute of the match. Baldur Grath could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 71st minute of the match, but Olaf Sellmann made a huge save. Hinrik Diening scored 2-0 in the 72nd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Sergio Wenauer, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Baldur Grath sent away a hard shot on goal in the 78th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 82nd minute, Baldur Grath got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Borussia Dortmund's zone, Hinrik Diening stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sergio Wenauer came out of the goal and Hinrik Diening tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Bayern's Hinrik Diening got a good chance for a goal in the 90th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Bayern's Olaf Sellmann played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ricky Dörnbrack in the 92nd minute of play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Hinrik Diening in the 95th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sergio Wenauer saved Borussia Dortmund from getting behind.
