Grüsen's Kai Behlau proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 21st minute of the match, managed to save Grüsen from getting a goal against them. Kai Behlau showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Petro Karstens in the 34th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, Grüsen's Fabio Bentin got a free kick in the 35th minute. The supporters of Hannover 96 booed when Grüsen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 38 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hasso Berrisch didn't get a good kick on the ball. 40 minutes into the match, Grüsen's goal looked a bit too open when Petro Karstens came free, but Kai Behlau reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Franz Maiwald had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 44th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. A collision led to Grüsen getting a freekick after 47 minutes play. Hasso Berrisch hit a great ball. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Jorck Moll showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Arne Breuninger in the 59th minute of the match. Erich Haldenwanger took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 62nd minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Jorck Moll. Hannover 96's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Beat Maus during the 62nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Hasso Berrisch recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 65th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Beat Maus got his second yellow card in the match during the 66th minute which meant that he had to leave the ground. Kurt Reffelmann fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 75th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kai Behlau having to interfere. Jorck Moll was out of position in the 84 minute of play, and Arne Breuninger capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Arne Breuninger really showed his touch with that goal: 0-2. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Arne Breuninger in the 88th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Jorck Moll prevented the ball from getting in the gole. An unexpectedly hard shot by Bartholomäus Pohlmann in the 91st minute of play forced Grüsen's goalkeeper Kai Behlau to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a rather tough play, Grüsen's Fabio Bentin got a free kick in the 94th minute. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Grüsen eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
