When Mattias Lenhardt fell near the penalty area in the 26th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored SC Union Dresden's protests and gave Mattias Lenhardt a yellow card for diving instead. The audience thought a goal was coming when Bartholomäus Pohlmann got free with Edgar Assmann in the 28th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Bertram Kreiser received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 32nd minute. Jorck Moll tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Justin Fremd blasted a shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Jorck Moll having to make a save. An unexpectedly hard shot by Damien Layher in the 57th minute of play forced SC Union Dresden's goalkeeper Edgar Assmann to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 64th minute, Bertram Kreiser got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. If Bertram Kreiser had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 68th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After some fancy dribbling in the 71st minute, Bertram Kreiser managed to get in a good position for a shot. SC Union Dresden's supporters rose to their feet, but Bertram Kreiser was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jorck Moll breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Petro Karstens sent away a hard shot on goal in the 75th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Bartholomäus Pohlmann sent away a hard shot on goal in the 77th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a defensive mix-up in Hannover 96's zone, Bertram Kreiser stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jorck Moll came out of the goal and Bertram Kreiser tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Hannover 96's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave SC Union Dresden the free kick. Edgar Assmann showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Damien Layher in the 98th minute of the match. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Hannover 96 had won after a very even match.
