After 4 played minutes FSV Mainz 05 got a freekick which was hit by Karol Linke. In the 4th minute, Rolf Bode got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Felix Gröger came out of the goal in the 6th minute to try and stop a shot by FC Wacker Gotha's Antonio Schurr. But to his dismay, Antonio Schurr quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Phil Thomale fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 11th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Niko Brömme having to interfere. In the 13th minute the ball was on its way in behind FC Wacker Gotha's goalkeeper Niko Brömme, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. The supporters of FC Wacker Gotha booed when FSV Mainz 05 was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 14 match minutes in a wonderful position. Phil Thomale didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Antonio Schurr in the 21st minute of play forced FSV Mainz 05's goalkeeper Felix Gröger to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Rolf Bode in the 36th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Felix Gröger prevented the ball from getting in the gole. 37 minutes into the match, FC Wacker Gotha's Leonid Nix sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Felix Gröger narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 43rd minute, Ralf Christen hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Rolf Bode struck a weak shot in the 44th minute. Felix Gröger didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for FC Wacker Gotha. After the first half FC Wacker Gotha were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Antonio Schurr to strike the kick off in the second half. Niko Brömme made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Olaf Rudolf in the 51st minute of play. Felix Gröger took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Antonio Schurr, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The supporters of FSV Mainz 05 booed when FC Wacker Gotha was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 73 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fatih Ustorf didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 74th minute the ball was on its way in behind FC Wacker Gotha's goalkeeper Niko Brömme, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Niko Brömme showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Phil Thomale, who was totally free with the ball in the 76th minute. FC Wacker Gotha's Niko Brömme played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Phil Thomale in the 80th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Bernhard Bugiel in the 83rd minute of play forced FC Wacker Gotha's goalkeeper Niko Brömme to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Niko Brömme showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Bernhard Bugiel in the 85th minute of the match. Phil Thomale's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Niko Brömme read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 87th minute of play. In the 89th minute, Phil Thomale ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Niko Brömme was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-3. Fatih Ustorf's late challenge caught a FSV Mainz 05's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Fatih Ustorf helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of FSV Mainz 05 booed when FC Wacker Gotha was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 93 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fatih Ustorf didn't get a good kick on the ball. FC Wacker Gotha's Niko Brömme played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Phil Thomale in the 96th minute of play. FC Wacker Gotha played a much better game than FSV Mainz 05 and deserved their victory. The FSV Mainz 05 players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
