With an all-out effort, FSV Mainz 05's Waldemar Schiele threw himself towards the right post 18 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Bernhard Bugiel, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Winfried Appenrodt's late challenge caught a FSV Mainz 05's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Winfried Appenrodt helped the player get up and apologised. Winfried Appenrodt hit a great freekick 23 minutes into the match. Florian Mühlenhaupt could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 40th minute of the match, but Waldemar Schiele made a huge save. Bernhard Bugiel received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 41st minute. Waldemar Schiele tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Bernhard Bugiel stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. One of FSV Mainz 05:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of FC Poldi:s goal. In the 60th minute, the referee gave FC Poldi a penalty. Emmerich Schmitz looked confident and blasted the ball into goal by the left post, totally unstoppable for Felix Gröger. Klaus Hoch charged in rather forcefully in the 64th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Klaus Hoch the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of FC Poldi booed when FSV Mainz 05 was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 64 match minutes in a wonderful position. Klaus Hoch didn't get a good kick on the ball. FC Poldi's Waldemar Schiele played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bernhard Bugiel in the 71st minute of play. Leif-Eric Wegener fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 76th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Felix Gröger having to interfere. 78 minutes into the game, Leif-Eric Wegener cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-3. Felix Gröger was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Leif-Eric Wegener could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 84th minute of the match, but Felix Gröger made a huge save. Bernhard Bugiel sent away a hard shot on goal in the 85th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. After a rather tough play, FC Poldi's Friedemann Schubert got a free kick in the 90th minute. In the 95th minute, Florian Mühlenhaupt got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 97th minute, Phil Thomale made a precise shot to the right of Waldemar Schiele. FC Poldi's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-3.
