The referee ignored Hesselte's protests and gave Kornelius Ungerechts a yellow card for diving instead. Kornelius Ungerechts kicked well hit freekick during the 7th minute of the match. Abdelaziz Sanio showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Rüdiger Pofahl in the 10th minute of the match. Abdelaziz Sanio took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Arndt Freund, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 13th match minute, Borussia was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Jann Hinz to maneuver through the defense. The Hesselte fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Abdelaziz Sanio should have stopped the shot. An unexpectedly hard shot by Arndt Freund in the 29th minute of play forced Hesselte's goalkeeper Abdelaziz Sanio to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A collision led to Hesselte getting a freekick after 31 minutes play. Kornelius Ungerechts hit a great ball. 32 minutes into the match, Hesselte's goal looked a bit too open when Arndt Freund came free, but Abdelaziz Sanio reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Hesselte's Abdelaziz Sanio played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rüdiger Pofahl in the 35th minute of play. The supporters of Borussia booed when Hesselte was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 35 match minutes in a wonderful position. Kornelius Ungerechts didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 44th minute, Wim Winkler left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Hesselte fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-1. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

After 72 minutes, Wim Winkler mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Hesselte and the Borussia players grew even worse after the yellow card. Abdelaziz Sanio made a fantastic save in the 73rd minute, when Arndt Freund sent off a good shot on target. Abdelaziz Sanio showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rüdiger Pofahl, who was totally free with the ball in the 76th minute. Pepe Friedrich recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 77th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Rüdiger Pofahl in the 80th minute of play forced Hesselte's goalkeeper Abdelaziz Sanio to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Hesselte's Adam Homolka got his second yellow card of the match in the 84th minute. The referee ordered Adam Homolka off the ground. Abdelaziz Sanio made a fantastic save in the 92nd minute, when Arndt Freund sent off a good shot on target. Arndt Freund came free with the goalkeeper in the 94th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Abdelaziz Sanio could save by the left post.
