The supporters of Ajax Amsterdam booed when Baier Leverkusen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Patrick Oliver Kurbjuweit didn't get a good kick on the ball. Niko Frijia made an important save on a dangerous shot by Harald Warnke in the 17th minute. A collision led to Baier Leverkusen getting a freekick after 18 minutes play. Patrick Oliver Kurbjuweit hit a great ball. In the 20th minute of the match, Ruprecht Bansen got a very nice opportunity to score, but Niko Frijia was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Markus Pletz received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 21st minute. Alexander Plank tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Harald Warnke could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 28th minute of the match, but Niko Frijia made a huge save.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Rolf Seidl to strike the kick off in the second half. Baier Leverkusen's Markus Pletz was standing unmarked in front of the goal when he, in the 59th play minute, got the ball and easily drilled it into the goal. In the 72nd match minute, Baier Leverkusen was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Patrick Oliver Kurbjuweit to maneuver through the defense. In the 89th minute Harald Warnke shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Niko Frijia saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.
