Hauwech's Peter Gelb played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Andreas Dörfler in the 4th minute of play. Henning Bartz made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bastian Funkel in the 8th minute of play. 11 minutes into the match, Schalke 04's Andreas Dörfler sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Peter Gelb narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Kilian Bogner hit a great freekick 13 minutes into the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Andreas Dörfler in the 16th minute of play forced Hauwech's goalkeeper Peter Gelb to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Peter Gelb made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Kilian Bogner in the 18th minute of play. 18 minutes into the game, Claudius Lühmann was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Hauwech's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Schalke 04 the free kick. The supporters of Schalke 04 booed when Hauwech was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 18 match minutes in a wonderful position. Claudius Lühmann didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 22 minutes, Werner Berlin mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Hauwech and the Schalke 04 players grew even worse after the yellow card. Esau Budden was probably a little too eager to shoot when he, in the 23rd played minute, shot the ball from way out. The shot was hard, but the ball flew wide of the goal. Wolfram Ebel recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 25th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Henning Gallois received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 29th minute. Peter Gelb tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After a rather tough play, Schalke 04's Kilian Bogner got a free kick in the 31st minute. Peter Gelb made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Andreas Dörfler in the 39th minute of play. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

The wind increased when Andreas Dörfler made the kick off in the second half. Henning Gallois who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 51stth minute tested the skills of Peter Gelb when he managed to save the team from getting behind. If Bastian Funkel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 53rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Peter Gelb made an important save on a dangerous shot by Henning Gallois in the 54th minute. If Henning Gallois had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 56th minute. The audience was convinced that Andreas Dörfler's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Peter Gelb was relentless in the 58th minute of the game. Wolfram Ebel's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Henning Bartz read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 67th minute of play. After having played for 68 minutes, Andreas Dörfler managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Schalke 04's supporters crossed their fingers, but Andreas Dörfler was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Henning Gallois received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 74th minute. Peter Gelb tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Peter Gelb didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Henning Gallois went, in the 80th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-1 was the resulting score. When Linus Mönnich came up free with the goalie in the 89th minute, the Schalke 04 fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Linus Mönnich couldn't finish the play. Peter Gelb took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Andreas Dörfler, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The Hauwech fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. Schalke 04 were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
