After a rather tough play, Wattenscheid's Christer Brand got a free kick in the 4th minute. After having played for 7 minutes, Bo Söhner managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC Union Mühlhausen's supporters crossed their fingers, but Bo Söhner was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Albrecht Laing took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Bo Söhner, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Vaclav Nahles struck a weak shot in the 30th minute. Elmar Bordorf didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Wattenscheid. Albrecht Laing showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Bo Söhner in the 32nd minute of the match. The crowd rose to their feet as Wattenscheid's Vaclav Nahles slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Elmar Bordorf. That made the score 1-0 after 33 minutes of play. If Bo Söhner had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 43rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When Krister Neubauer fell near the penalty area in the 47th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Wattenscheid's protests and gave Krister Neubauer a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Wattenscheid getting a freekick after 47 minutes play. Krister Neubauer hit a great ball. FC Union Mühlhausen's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Emil Welz in the 50th minute. The corner ended in Ullrich Körper almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Wattenscheid's Albrecht Laing did a great save. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Vaclav Nahles stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Bo Söhner recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 53rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Toralf Abertonnen's late challenge caught a Wattenscheid's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Toralf Abertonnen helped the player get up and apologised. Toralf Abertonnen hit a great freekick 58 minutes into the match. After some careless play in the FC Union Mühlhausen defense, Fabian Liche kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Elmar Bordorf. The FC Union Mühlhausen fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Elmar Bordorf should have stopped the shot. Vaclav Nahles sent away a hard shot on goal in the 63rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Elmar Bordorf made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Vaclav Nahles in the 67th minute of play. In the 69thth minute of the game Fabian Liche who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but FC Union Mühlhausen's Elmar Bordorf was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 71 minutes into the match, FC Union Mühlhausen's goal looked a bit too open when Fabian Liche came free, but Elmar Bordorf reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Vaclav Nahles fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 74th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Elmar Bordorf having to interfere. A collision led to Wattenscheid getting a freekick after 76 minutes play. Esteban Leutheusser hit a great ball. Albrecht Laing was in exellent shape and made a fantastic save when he, in the 77th minute of the match, managed to get hold of the ball after a long shot from Emil Welz. With an all-out effort, FC Union Mühlhausen's Albrecht Laing threw himself towards the right post 89 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Ulf Kozub, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. When the match clock showed 92 minutes, the score became 3-0 when Fabian Liche sped through FC Union Mühlhausen's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Elmar Bordorf. Wattenscheid's Vaclav Nahles got a good chance for a goal in the 95th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Elmar Bordorf showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Fabian Liche in the 96th minute of the match. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Wattenscheid fans cheered their team off the field, for while FC Union Mühlhausen had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
