The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After 6 played minutes Red Bull Augsburg got a freekick which was hit by Lucio Rein. Folker Engelmann fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 8th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Herbert Fendt having to interfere. 15 minutes into the match, Julius Riehm notched a goal, 0-1, to the right of Red Bull Augsburg's Herbert Fendt. Herbert Fendt was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Fenerbahce Cologne's Björn Ehret played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Curd Wilzek in the 21st minute of play. Folker Engelmann recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 25th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Julius Riehm fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 26th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Herbert Fendt having to interfere. In the 29th minute, Lucio Rein hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Red Bull Augsburg's Herbert Fendt played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Folker Engelmann in the 31st minute of play. Michael Nachtmann hit a great freekick 32 minutes into the match. 36 minutes into the match, Red Bull Augsburg's goal looked a bit too open when Julius Riehm came free, but Herbert Fendt reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Folker Engelmann had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 37th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Herbert Fendt showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Julius Riehm, who was totally free with the ball in the 39th minute. Hermann Mierzwa hit a great freekick 40 minutes into the match. Julius Riehm sent away a hard shot on goal in the 43rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After the first half Fenerbahce Cologne were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

If Folker Engelmann had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 60th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Hernando Locherer during the 63rd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 63 played minutes Fenerbahce Cologne got a freekick which was hit by Hernando Locherer. Julius Riehm's late challenge caught a Red Bull Augsburg's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Julius Riehm helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Red Bull Augsburg booed when Fenerbahce Cologne was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 66 match minutes in a wonderful position. Julius Riehm didn't get a good kick on the ball. Edbert Köffer received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 68th minute. Björn Ehret tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Curd Wilzek took the ball and in the 71 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Björn Ehret. Björn Ehret dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. When Julius Riehm came up free with the goalie in the 77th minute, the Fenerbahce Cologne fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Julius Riehm couldn't finish the play. Julius Riehm received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 80th minute. Herbert Fendt tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Hernando Locherer kicked well hit freekick during the 97th minute of the match. Fenerbahce Cologne played a much better game than Red Bull Augsburg and deserved their victory. The Red Bull Augsburg players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
