Calvin Oswald stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Manfred Cabanis's shot from short distance in the 16th minute. Lothar Riedel might have been able to make a better finish in the 22nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Stefan Segner. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Lothar Riedel ran back to his position shaking his head. After having played for 25 minutes, Manfred Cabanis managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. ZüricherFC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Manfred Cabanis was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 27th play minute Frank Eitler came free and shot an unsuspected shot which went into goal from the right pole behind a surprised Calvin Oswald. 1-0. After having played for 45 minutes, Frank Eitler managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Frank Eitler's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Calvin Oswald read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 47th minute of play. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.
