1. SG Union Frankfurt's Rudolf Rutkowski started the match with a crisp pass. The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Erik Scherhag showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rudolf Rutkowski, who was totally free with the ball in the 3rd minute. Erik Scherhag made an important save on a dangerous shot by Walter Ruthus in the 7th minute. Ephraim Rexhaus kicked well hit freekick during the 9th minute of the match. Eintracht Frankfurt's Erik Scherhag proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 10th minute of the match, managed to save Eintracht Frankfurt from getting a goal against them. When Kurt-Jürgen Riek-Nagy fell near the penalty area in the 11th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Eintracht Frankfurt's protests and gave Kurt-Jürgen Riek-Nagy a yellow card for diving instead. After 12 played minutes, 1. SG Union Frankfurt's Nikolai Meul shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Erik Scherhag came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in 1. SG Union Frankfurt reached it. Erik Scherhag took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tsuneo Balland, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 15th minute Rudolf Rutkowski shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Erik Scherhag saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 1. SG Union Frankfurt's Wladimir Sahin played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Torben Weigelt in the 19th minute of play. Bengt Brecher's late challenge caught a Eintracht Frankfurt's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Bengt Brecher helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to 1. SG Union Frankfurt getting a freekick after 19 minutes play. Bengt Brecher hit a great ball. After 22 played minutes 1. SG Union Frankfurt got a freekick which was hit by Amir Grüner. Erik Scherhag made a fantastic save in the 25th minute, when Walter Ruthus sent off a good shot on target. 27 minutes into the game, Torben Weigelt cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-1. Wladimir Sahin was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 29th minute, Kurt-Jürgen Riek-Nagy hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Ingvar Heintz struck a weak shot in the 33rd minute. Wladimir Sahin didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Eintracht Frankfurt. After 35 minutes, Ephraim Rexhaus mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Eintracht Frankfurt and the 1. SG Union Frankfurt players grew even worse after the yellow card. Ephraim Rexhaus hit a great freekick 35 minutes into the match. A hard shot by Nikolai Meul from long distance, 36 minutes into the match, got Erik Scherhag's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. Walter Ruthus could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 39th minute of the match, but Erik Scherhag made a huge save. A collision led to Eintracht Frankfurt getting a freekick after 39 minutes play. Boris Moll hit a great ball. 42 minutes into the match, Walter Ruthus notched a goal, 2-1, to the right of Eintracht Frankfurt's Erik Scherhag. Erik Scherhag was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 3-1.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Ingvar Heintz to make the kick off. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Walter Ruthus in the 55th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Erik Scherhag saved Eintracht Frankfurt from getting behind. 56 minutes into the game, 1. SG Union Frankfurt's Rudolf Rutkowski nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Erik Scherhag made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-1. Erik Scherhag showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Walter Ruthus in the 74th minute of the match. Erik Scherhag stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Walter Ruthus's shot from short distance in the 80th minute. In the 82nd minute Tsuneo Balland shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Erik Scherhag saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 84 played minutes Eintracht Frankfurt got a freekick which was hit by Boris Moll. In the 86th minute of the match Nikolai Meul sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Erik Scherhag skillfully saved the ball. Erik Scherhag showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rudolf Rutkowski, who was totally free with the ball in the 89th minute. Wladimir Sahin showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ingvar Heintz, who was totally free with the ball in the 94th minute. Rudolf Rutkowski struck a weak shot in the 95th minute. Erik Scherhag didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for 1. SG Union Frankfurt. After a defensive mix-up in Eintracht Frankfurt's zone, Bengt Brecher stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Erik Scherhag came out of the goal and Bengt Brecher tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. There was no doubt that 1. SG Union Frankfurt were the better team. 1. SG Union Frankfurt's players enjoyed the ovations of the crowd after the victory.
