The audience thought a goal was coming when Maximilian Hiller-Schmid got free with Mathis Rippert in the 8th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 0-1 became the score in the 13th minute when André Zeiss elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. 18 minutes into the match, Borussia Dortmund's Victor Jerat sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Percy Skjelbred narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 26th minute André Zeiss shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Percy Skjelbred saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. A collision led to 1.FC Köln getting a freekick after 26 minutes play. Vittorio Altmüller hit a great ball. Maximilian Hiller-Schmid who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 30thth minute tested the skills of Mathis Rippert when he managed to save the team from getting behind. In the 35th minute the ball was on its way in behind 1.FC Köln's goalkeeper Percy Skjelbred, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Victor Jerat's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Percy Skjelbred read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 37th minute of play. If Bartolomeo Walter had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. André Zeiss received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 46th minute. Percy Skjelbred tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-3.

When Roland Lorenz fell near the penalty area in the 51st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Borussia Dortmund's protests and gave Roland Lorenz a yellow card for diving instead. After a defensive mix-up in 1.FC Köln's zone, Victor Jerat stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Percy Skjelbred came out of the goal and Victor Jerat tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Victor Jerat received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 72nd minute. Percy Skjelbred tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Borussia Dortmund's Mathis Rippert played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bartolomeo Walter in the 78th minute of play. With a little luck, 1.FC Köln's Percy Skjelbred got control of the ball when André Zeiss tried to sneak it across the goal line. Percy Skjelbred took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Victor Jerat, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The crowd rose to their feet as Borussia Dortmund's Victor Jerat slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Percy Skjelbred. That made the score 0-4 after 92 minutes of play. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Borussia Dortmund walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
