Percy Skjelbred made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. Bernd Kahlert struck a weak shot in the 12th minute. Percy Skjelbred didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Neubrandenburg. When Rainer Maria Volkmann fell near the penalty area in the 15th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Neubrandenburg's protests and gave Rainer Maria Volkmann a yellow card for diving instead. In the 16th minute, Rainer Maria Volkmann hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. When Gunnar Kirchberger came up free with the goalie in the 25th minute, the 1.FC Köln fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Gunnar Kirchberger couldn't finish the play. 25 minutes into the match, 1.FC Köln's Gunnar Kirchberger sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Arko Lau narrowly saved just below the crossbar. 1.FC Köln's Percy Skjelbred played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bernd Kahlert in the 27th minute of play. After some careless play in the 1.FC Köln defense, Fritz Rudolf Bankett kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Percy Skjelbred. The 1.FC Köln fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Percy Skjelbred should have stopped the shot. In the 35th match minute, Neubrandenburg was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by David Paul to maneuver through the defense. The long shot by Roy Holzer in the 37th minute really tested Arko Lau's skills. The ball was on its way into the goal to the left of him when he managed to stretch himself and save the shot and avoid a goal. Fritz Rudolf Bankett scored 0-3 in the 40th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Percy Skjelbred, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Fritz Rudolf Bankett made a kick off. Hannes Abernett's late challenge caught a Neubrandenburg's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Hannes Abernett helped the player get up and apologised. In the 55th match minute, 1.FC Köln was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hannes Abernett to maneuver through the defense. Neubrandenburg's Arko Lau played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bartolomeo Walter in the 65th minute of play. Percy Skjelbred took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Fritz Rudolf Bankett, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 71 minutes into the game, Fritz Rudolf Bankett recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Percy Skjelbred. Fritz Rudolf Bankett showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-4. Percy Skjelbred showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Fritz Rudolf Bankett, who was totally free with the ball in the 74th minute. Rainer Maria Volkmann kicked well hit freekick during the 75th minute of the match. After having played for 77 minutes, Bartolomeo Walter managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. 1.FC Köln's supporters crossed their fingers, but Bartolomeo Walter was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Maximilian Runge during the 79th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 79 played minutes Neubrandenburg got a freekick which was hit by Maximilian Runge. The supporters of 1.FC Köln booed when Neubrandenburg was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 81 match minutes in a wonderful position. Maximilian Runge didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 84th play minute Bernd Kahlert came free and shot an unsuspected shot which went into goal from the right pole behind a surprised Percy Skjelbred. 1-5. The audience thought a goal was coming when Fritz Rudolf Bankett got free with Percy Skjelbred in the 89th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Fritz Rudolf Bankett hit a great freekick 92 minutes into the match. In the 94th minute, Vittorio Altmüller got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Fritz Rudolf Bankett recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 96th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. When the match was over Neubrandenburg could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than 1.FC Köln throughout the match.
