KFC Uerdingen were awarded a corner in the 7th minute after VFB Stuttgart's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Karl Gabler took the corner. VFB Stuttgart's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Karl Gabler in the 16th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Tobias Guenther prevented the ball from getting in the gole. When Friedrich Reiner fell near the penalty area in the 18th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored VFB Stuttgart's protests and gave Friedrich Reiner a yellow card for diving instead. KFC Uerdingen's Klaus-Dieter van Hoddis played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Hellmut Karrenbauer in the 47th minute of play. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

In the 51st minute, VFB Stuttgart's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Matthias Kurbjuweit fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. After a defensive mix-up in VFB Stuttgart's zone, Karl Gabler stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Tobias Guenther came out of the goal and Karl Gabler tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 55 played minutes VFB Stuttgart got a freekick which was hit by Norman Neffin. Matthias Kurbjuweits short, quick shot in the 62ndth minute got Tobias Guenther to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. After a rather tough play, VFB Stuttgart's Norman Neffin got a free kick in the 63rd minute. Matthias Kurbjuweit fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tobias Guenther having to interfere. In the 70th minute, Matthias Kurbjuweit reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Tobias Guenther. The goal made the score 1-2. A collision led to VFB Stuttgart getting a freekick after 78 minutes play. Hellmut Karrenbauer hit a great ball. Matthias Kurbjuweit sent away a hard shot on goal in the 82nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Egidius Pfitzner fell near the penalty area in the 89th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored KFC Uerdingen's protests and gave Egidius Pfitzner a yellow card for diving instead. In the 89th minute, Egidius Pfitzner hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The VFB Stuttgart fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. KFC Uerdingen were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
