Steffe Carpenter's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Ritchie Kest read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 14th minute of play. After a defensive mix-up in ADO Den Haag's zone, Herald De Metser stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Kamiel Peers came out of the goal and Herald De Metser tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Pierrot Van Hoovelt charged in rather forcefully in the 22nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Pierrot Van Hoovelt the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Anthony Huijbregs's shot from long distance in the 23rd minute was not bad at all, but ADO Den Haag's Kamiel Peers knew what was happening and pushed the ball into his arms just before it hit the right post. Carel Vermeulen received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 25th minute. Ritchie Kest tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. If Herald De Metser had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 29th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The crowd rose to their feet as Herald De Metser kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Kamiel Peers. That made the score 1-0 in the 36 minute of play. After having played for 40 minutes, Herald De Metser managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. KAA GENT's supporters crossed their fingers, but Herald De Metser was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Herald De Metser received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 43rd minute. Kamiel Peers tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Johny Snoekens during the 79th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card.
