The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Dominick Van Linthoud fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 8th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jorge Maerschalk having to interfere. 9 minutes into the game, Douglas Van Boeckost was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Pomptje's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Sporting CP the free kick. Douglas Van Boeckost kicked well hit freekick during the 9th minute of the match. After 11 played minutes Pomptje got a freekick which was hit by Xander-Paul Paelemans. In the 11th minute of the match Stijn Stas shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Jorge Maerschalk showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. If Dominick Van Linthoud had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 15th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Jorge Maerschalk took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Dominick Van Linthoud, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Dominick Van Linthoud sent away a hard shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a defensive mix-up in Sporting CP's zone, Sven Ketelers stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sven De Raedemaecker came out of the goal and Sven Ketelers tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. If Sven Ketelers had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The audience thought a goal was coming when Sven Ketelers got free with Sven De Raedemaecker in the 30th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. A collision led to Sporting CP getting a freekick after 31 minutes play. Soren Berckmans hit a great ball. Sven De Raedemaecker showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Dave De Prins, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. Jorge Maerschalk made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Soren Berckmans in the 38th minute of play. In the 40th minute, Dominick Van Linthoud left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Sporting CP fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. After a rather tough play, Sporting CP's Soren Berckmans got a free kick in the 45th minute. Pomptje's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Francis Van de Wal in the 48th minute. The corner led Pomptje's Arthur Bogaerts to a score. 1-1 in the 48th minute. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The wind increased when Dominick Van Linthoud made the kick off in the second half. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Stijn Stas during the 54th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. A very good chance. 83 minutes into the match, Sven Ketelers had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Sven De Raedemaecker. Sporting CP's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Sven Ketelers was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-1. In the 89th minute, Niels Pulix hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 90 minutes into the match, Sporting CP's goal looked a bit too open when Dave De Prins came free, but Sven De Raedemaecker reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Jorge Maerschalk showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Dominick Van Linthoud, who was totally free with the ball in the 94th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Sven Ketelers in the 100th minute of play forced Sporting CP's goalkeeper Sven De Raedemaecker to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Sporting CP's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
