Seating: 1966, VIP seats: 170) It was fairly windy and cold on the field when Andrew Whitehead kicked off to start the match. After a rather tough play, FC Onion's Andrew Whitehead got a free kick in the 4th minute. Alan Simms showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from John Thompson, who was totally free with the ball in the 6th minute. Jacob Bond made a fantastic save in the 12th minute, when Joe Marshall sent off a good shot on target. John Thompson might have been able to make a better finish in the 15th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Alan Simms. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. John Thompson ran back to his position shaking his head. John Thompson's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Alan Simms read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 16th minute of play. After having played for 19 minutes, John Thompson managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC Onion's supporters crossed their fingers, but John Thompson was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 21st match minute, Budleigh Salterton was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Stephen Moyse to maneuver through the defense. In the 25th minute, Guy Key got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. John Thompson fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 28th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Alan Simms having to interfere. Andrew Whitehead received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 29th minute. Alan Simms tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 30th match minute, Budleigh Salterton was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Stu Spink to maneuver through the defense. A collision led to FC Onion getting a freekick after 34 minutes play. Bobby Driver hit a great ball. The supporters of FC Onion booed when Budleigh Salterton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 37 match minutes in a wonderful position. Peter Higgins didn't get a good kick on the ball. Alan Simms made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from John Thompson in the 40th minute of play. Jacob Bond showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Peter Higgins, who was totally free with the ball in the 44th minute. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.
The supporters of FC Onion booed when Budleigh Salterton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 52 match minutes in a wonderful position. Stu Spink didn't get a good kick on the ball. Alan Simms showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Guy Key, who was totally free with the ball in the 56th minute. Guy Key sent away a hard shot on goal in the 58th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. After some fancy dribbling in the 61st minute, Stephen Moyse managed to get in a good position for a shot. Budleigh Salterton's supporters rose to their feet, but Stephen Moyse was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jacob Bond breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. When Guy Key came up free with the goalie in the 62nd minute, the FC Onion fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Guy Key couldn't finish the play. Guy Key recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 64th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After some careless play in the Budleigh Salterton defense, John Thompson kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Alan Simms. The Budleigh Salterton fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Alan Simms should have stopped the shot. 72 minutes into the match, FC Onion's goal looked a bit too open when Joe Marshall came free, but Jacob Bond reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. With his leg Alan Simms managed to avoid a goal in the 78thth minute, when FC Onion's John Thompson fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Roy Flynn hit a great freekick 84 minutes into the match. In the 87th match minute, FC Onion was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Roy Flynn to maneuver through the defense. 88 minutes into the match, Budleigh Salterton's Stu Spink broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Budleigh Salterton's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Stu Spink in the 94th minute. A nice corner shot did that Stu Spink got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Jacob Bond quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. When the match was over FC Onion could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Budleigh Salterton throughout the match.
