The tension between the CUX United and the Budleigh Salterton players grew even worse after the yellow card. CUX United's Jo Higginson got a good chance for a goal in the 7th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After some careless play in the Budleigh Salterton defense, Martin Osbourne kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Alan Simms. The Budleigh Salterton fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Alan Simms should have stopped the shot. Alan Simms acted impressively in front of the goal and made a superb save when he, in the 12th minute, took the ball on the long shot from Gavin Pollock. Alan Simms showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jo Higginson in the 13th minute of the match. Martin Osbourne sent away a hard shot on goal in the 17th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Peter Higgins hit a great freekick 19 minutes into the match. Alan Simms made an important save on a dangerous shot by Martin Osbourne in the 26th minute. Jo Higginson blasted a shot towards the goal in the 45th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Alan Simms having to make a save. Martin Osbourne's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Alan Simms firmly grabbed it by the left post. After 48 played minutes Budleigh Salterton got a freekick which was hit by Stephen Moyse. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 3-1 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Martin Osbourne to make the kick off. Darryl Titmus's late challenge caught a CUX United's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Alan Simms made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Martin Osbourne in the 73rd minute of play. In the 79th minute Martin Osbourne shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Alan Simms saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Alan Simms showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Martin Osbourne, who was totally free with the ball in the 81st minute. After a rather tough play, Budleigh Salterton's Brendon Kaye got a free kick in the 82nd minute. Micheal Carpenter fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 89th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Alan Simms having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Martin Osbourne in the 91st minute of play forced Budleigh Salterton's goalkeeper Alan Simms to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 95th minute Martin Osbourne shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Alan Simms saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jo Higginson in the 96th minute of play forced Budleigh Salterton's goalkeeper Alan Simms to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. CUX United had played much better football throughout.
