The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Geçkinli's Aykut Bilkan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Zülfikar Maruf in the 13th minute of play. In the 17th minute Efekan Durukan shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Aykut Bilkan saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After having played for 19 minutes, Metin Şendoğan managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Geçkinli's supporters crossed their fingers, but Metin Şendoğan was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Aykut Bilkan took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Efekan Durukan, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 27 played minutes Geçkinli got a freekick which was hit by Birol Temizkal. In the 34thth minute of the game Efekan Durukan who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Geçkinli's Aykut Bilkan was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Metin Şendoğan got free with Mürsel Mansız in the 37th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. İdris Adısönmez's late challenge caught a Geçkinli's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. İdris Adısönmez helped the player get up and apologised. In the 37th minute, İdris Adısönmez hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. GalataSaray A.Ş.'s Mürsel Mansız proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 46th minute of the match, managed to save GalataSaray A.Ş. from getting a goal against them. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Mürsel Mansız showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Ali Asım Özen in the 51st minute of the match. After having played for 53 minutes, Zülfikar Maruf managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. GalataSaray A.Ş.'s supporters crossed their fingers, but Zülfikar Maruf was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 54th minute, GalataSaray A.Ş.'s Efekan Durukan ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Aykut Bilkan. Aykut Bilkan yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 0-1. Mürsel Mansız made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Metin Şendoğan in the 57th minute of play. Ali Asım Özen took the ball and in the 59 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Mürsel Mansız. Mürsel Mansız dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 61st minute of the game. One of GalataSaray A.Ş.:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Geçkinli:s goal. The audience was convinced that Efekan Durukan's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Aykut Bilkan was relentless in the 75th minute of the game. With his leg Aykut Bilkan managed to avoid a goal in the 81stth minute, when GalataSaray A.Ş.'s Efekan Durukan fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. After a rather tough play, Geçkinli's Esen Hastimur got a free kick in the 84th minute. Sait Birtan, 84 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Naci Eğriöz might have been able to make a better finish in the 88th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Aykut Bilkan. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Efekan Durukan fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 88th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Aykut Bilkan having to interfere. The supporters of Geçkinli booed when GalataSaray A.Ş. was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 90 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ender Kamver didn't get a good kick on the ball. Geçkinli's Ali Asım Özen got a good chance for a goal in the 96th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. GalataSaray A.Ş.'s players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
