Niculae Doman fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 7th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cornel Grozăvescu having to interfere. Cornel Grozăvescu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Felix Mihăescu in the 9th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 14th minute, Iurie Coșeriu managed to get in a good position for a shot. SErioXul's supporters rose to their feet, but Iurie Coșeriu was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Șerban Lăzăroiu breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Felix Mihăescu in the 17th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Cornel Grozăvescu prevented the ball from getting in the gole. When Felix Mihăescu came up free with the goalie in the 18th minute, the F.C. Lupeni fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Felix Mihăescu couldn't finish the play. A collision led to SErioXul getting a freekick after 21 minutes play. Iulian Cotoi hit a great ball. Aron Omescu took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 22nd minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Cornel Grozăvescu. SErioXul's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Remus Rânceanu in the 23rd minute of play forced F.C. Lupeni's goalkeeper Șerban Lăzăroiu to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Felix Mihăescu sent away a hard shot on goal in the 32nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Felix Mihăescu received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 47th minute. Cornel Grozăvescu tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Remus Rânceanu was the one to do the kick off. After a rather tough play, F.C. Lupeni's Laurențiu Caranfil got a free kick in the 53rd minute. Șerban Lăzăroiu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Iurie Coșeriu, who was totally free with the ball in the 55th minute. If Remus Rânceanu had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 58th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. F.C. Lupeni had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
