In the 6th minute, Walter Atkinson got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Victor Rooney made a fantastic save in the 8th minute, when Samuel Bennett sent off a good shot on target. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Leon Rocastle during the 8th minute. The supporters of West Rainton booed when Maradona FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jeremy Potter didn't get a good kick on the ball. Maradona FC's Walter Atkinson got a good chance for a goal in the 39th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Samuel Bennett could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 41st minute of the match, but Victor Rooney made a huge save. Victor Rooney acted impressively in front of the goal and made a superb save when he, in the 42nd minute, took the ball on the long shot from Rowan Watson. After 44 played minutes Maradona FC got a freekick which was hit by Walter Atkinson. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Walter Atkinson to make the kick off. After a defensive mix-up in West Rainton's zone, Walter Atkinson stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Victor Rooney came out of the goal and Walter Atkinson tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Samuel Bennett received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 57th minute. Victor Rooney tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. If Tosh Cartwright had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 63rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 64th minute Kurt Townson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jonny Hicks saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 67th minute, one of Maradona FC:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Maradona FC. In the 69th minute there was a penalty for West Rainton. Rod Fleming stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Jonny Hicks. 0-2. The audience thought a goal was coming when Tosh Cartwright got free with Jonny Hicks in the 72nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After 74 minutes of play, Maradona FC's Walter Atkinson made it 1-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Victor Rooney was left in no man's land by his defense there! The supporters of West Rainton booed when Maradona FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 82 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jeremy Hulbert didn't get a good kick on the ball. 85 minutes into the match, Maradona FC's goalkeeper Jonny Hicks had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Rod Fleming. 91 minutes into the match, West Rainton's goal looked a bit too open when Walter Atkinson came free, but Victor Rooney reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Walter Atkinson had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 95th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The Maradona FC supporters were disappointed that their team didn't take anything from the match, despite matching West Rainton's performance. The match ended with a win for West Rainton.
