The goal made the score 1-0. Dương Minh Phượng took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Đào Thuy, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Vũ Thanh's late challenge caught a Thua Thien-Hue's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Vũ Thanh helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Thua Thien-Hue booed when Phu Tho was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 8 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dương Minh Phượng came out of the goal in the 19th minute to try and stop a shot by Phu Tho's Nguyễn Minh. But to his dismay, Nguyễn Minh quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. After 23 minutes of play Phu Tho's Vũ Thanh was too eager in his attempt to stop his opponent and brought him down. With that he got his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. Vũ Thanh kicked well hit freekick during the 24th minute of the match. After 25 minutes, Nguyễn Minh mouthed his way into the referee's book. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

After some fancy dribbling in the 52nd minute, Nguyễn Dinh managed to get in a good position for a shot. Thua Thien-Hue's supporters rose to their feet, but Nguyễn Dinh was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Văn Bien breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After 55 played minutes Phu Tho got a freekick which was hit by Nguyễn Huy. Đào Thuy sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 64 minutes, Nguyễn Dinh made it 3-1 with a short kick to the right side. Phu Tho's Văn Bien tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. After 69 minutes of play, Phu Tho's Đào Thuy made it 3-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Dương Minh Phượng was left in no man's land by his defense there! After 72 minutes, Nguyễn Dinh mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Thua Thien-Hue and the Phu Tho players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 72 played minutes Thua Thien-Hue got a freekick which was hit by Nguyễn Dinh. Thanks to some nice moves Đào Thuy could shoot a difficult shot in the 73rd minute, which Dương Minh Phượng however easily saved by the left post. Đào Thuy received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 75th minute. Dương Minh Phượng tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Văn Bien stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Nguyễn Dinh's shot from short distance in the 77th minute. Đào Thuy was really disappointed when he shot the ball just outside the right post instead of scoring a goal in the 80th minute. Phu Tho's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. After 85 played minutes Thua Thien-Hue got a freekick which was hit by Nguyễn Dinh. Đào Thuy could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 86th minute of the match, but Dương Minh Phượng made a huge save. Phu Tho's Đào Thuy came free and shot a quick shot against goal 87 minutes in the game, fortunately Dương Minh Phượng had problems saving as it came toward the left post. After having played for 90 minutes, Đào Thuy managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Phu Tho's supporters crossed their fingers, but Đào Thuy was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Đào Thuy struck a weak shot in the 92nd minute. Dương Minh Phượng didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Phu Tho. In the 95th match minute, Thua Thien-Hue was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nguyễn Huỳnh to maneuver through the defense. Phu Tho's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
