Phùng Ho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 25th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Nguyễn Cong Vinh having to interfere. Kontum's Nguyễn Cong Vinh played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Nguyễn Lien in the 27th minute of play. Nguyễn Cong Vinh took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Phùng Ho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Phạm Dung blasted a shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Phạm Tan having to make a save. In the 34th minute Phạm Dung shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Phạm Tan saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Nguyễn Cong Vinh showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Phùng Ho, who was totally free with the ball in the 38th minute. In the 49th minute Phùng Ho shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Nguyễn Cong Vinh saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Phạm Dung to make the kick off.
