Nguyễn Hieu showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Đào Thien in the 33rd minute of the match. After 34 played minutes Dak To got a freekick which was hit by Trần Nghiêm-Minh. Đào Than struck a weak shot in the 37th minute. Nguyễn Anh Hung didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Dak To. Nguyễn Hieu took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Đào Thien, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After some fancy dribbling in the 43rd minute, Đào Thien managed to get in a good position for a shot. TPHCM's supporters rose to their feet, but Đào Thien was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Nguyễn Hieu breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Trần Nghiêm-Minh charged in rather forcefully in the 44th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Trần Nghiêm-Minh the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. 46 minutes into the game, Nguyễn Hieu was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. TPHCM's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Dak To the free kick. In the 46th minute, one of TPHCM:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for TPHCM. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Đào Thien was the one to do the kick off.
