Phạm Khoi showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Nghiêm Minh, who was totally free with the ball in the 4th minute. Lang Son's Phạm Khoi proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 5th minute of the match, managed to save Lang Son from getting a goal against them. In the 7th minute, Trần Tong hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After a defensive mix-up in Lang Son's zone, Nghiêm Minh stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Phạm Khoi came out of the goal and Nghiêm Minh tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Nguyễn Lan in the 27th minute of play forced Vinh Yen's goalkeeper Nguyễn Phu to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Lang Son were awarded a corner in the 36th minute after Vinh Yen's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Võ Tuan took the corner. Lang Son's Võ Tuan was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Nguyễn Phu in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lê Dung got free with Phạm Khoi in the 39th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Phạm Khoi made an important save on a dangerous shot by Lê Dung in the 45th minute. Lê Dung fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 48th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Phạm Khoi having to interfere. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.
When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Nghiêm Minh made a kick off. Trần Hong hit a great freekick 56 minutes into the match. Nguyễn Lan's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Nguyễn Phu read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 60th minute of play. After some careless play in the Lang Son defense, Nghiêm Minh kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Phạm Khoi. The Lang Son fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Phạm Khoi should have stopped the shot. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Lê Dung in the 66th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Phạm Khoi saved Lang Son from getting behind. The audience thought a goal was coming when Đinh Liem got free with Nguyễn Phu in the 69th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After a defensive mix-up in Vinh Yen's zone, Nguyễn Lan stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Nguyễn Phu came out of the goal and Nguyễn Lan tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 73 minutes into the game, Đặng Tuan was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Vinh Yen's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Lang Son the free kick. After 73 played minutes Vinh Yen got a freekick which was hit by Đặng Tuan. In the 79thth minute of the game Lê Dung who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Lang Son's Phạm Khoi was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 86th minute, Đinh Liem managed to get in a good position for a shot. Lang Son's supporters rose to their feet, but Đinh Liem was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Nguyễn Phu breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Nguyễn Lan received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 89th minute. Nguyễn Phu tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Nghiêm Minh came up free with the goalie in the 96th minute, the Vinh Yen fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Nghiêm Minh couldn't finish the play. The final whistle blew with the score still tied, and both teams left the pitch thinking about the missed chances that could have given their team the win.
