Arif Chong took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 4th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Clive Au. The supporters of Merlion FC booed when Walthamstow was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Didi Abdul didn't get a good kick on the ball. Arif Chong, 17 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Joel Mathews received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 22nd minute. The audience thought a goal was coming when Afiz Leng got free with Clive Au in the 43rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 45th match minute, Merlion FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Arif Chong to maneuver through the defense. After the first half Walthamstow were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The wind increased when Joel Mathews made the kick off in the second half. After 52 played minutes, Walthamstow's Bakar Yeo shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Albert Lim came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Walthamstow reached it. If Felix Dhanabalan had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 58th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Clive Au didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Joel Mathews went, in the 62nd minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. 66 minutes into the game, Faiz Soon lined in a short shot 1-2 behind a frustrated Albert Lim.
