Alam Phua stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Amirul Namasivayam's shot from short distance in the 3rd minute. Alam Phua took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sajeev Chee, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Alam Phua showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sajeev Chee, who was totally free with the ball in the 7th minute. After a rather tough play, Derby's Sean Liang got a free kick in the 12th minute. Khairul Lee kicked well hit freekick during the 23rd minute of the match. The supporters of Ashburton AFC booed when Derby was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 29 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sean Liang didn't get a good kick on the ball. Ashburton AFC's Sajeev Chai played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Dale Nagasaki in the 31st minute of play. Dale Nagasaki kicked well hit freekick during the 37th minute of the match. Ashburton AFC's Sajeev Chee got a good chance for a goal in the 49th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Khairul Lee to make the kick off. 53 minutes into the game, Ashburton AFC's Sajeev Chee nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Alam Phua made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. Ashburton AFC's Sajeev Chai played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rifqi Hongyi in the 59th minute of play. After some careless play in the Ashburton AFC defense, Khairul Lee kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Sajeev Chai. The Ashburton AFC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Sajeev Chai should have stopped the shot. Amirul Namasivayam might have been able to make a better finish in the 76th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Alam Phua. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Amirul Namasivayam ran back to his position shaking his head. Sajeev Chai showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Rifqi Hongyi in the 79th minute of the match. After 86 minutes, Sean Chan mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Ashburton AFC and the Derby players grew even worse after the yellow card. A collision led to Ashburton AFC getting a freekick after 86 minutes play. Sean Chan hit a great ball. In the 87th minute of the match Darryl Lim sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Sajeev Chai skillfully saved the ball. After a rather tough play, Derby's Mohammad Shiong got a free kick in the 90th minute. In the 95th minute, Khairul Lee hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Sajeev Chee's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Alam Phua read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 96th minute of play.
