When Irwin Schutt came up free with the goalie in the 10th minute, the Melbourne Football Club fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Irwin Schutt couldn't finish the play. Melbourne Football Club's supporters crossed their fingers, but Irwin Schutt was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 20 minutes into the match, Jessop Fraser dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Arthur Grandison, 1-1. After a rather tough play, Melbourne Football Club's Douglas Ashwin got a free kick in the 23rd minute. Irwin Schutt took the ball and in the 28 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Cod Black. Cod Black dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-2. Irwin Schutt received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 33rd minute. Cod Black tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After some careless play in the Wallace defense, Irwin Schutt kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Cod Black. The Wallace fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Cod Black should have stopped the shot. After 43 minutes, Jessop Fraser mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Wallace and the Melbourne Football Club players grew even worse after the yellow card. Jessop Fraser hit a great freekick 44 minutes into the match. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 1-3 lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Edwin Diehl was the one to do the kick off. 52 minutes into the match, Edwin Diehl notched a goal, 2-3, to the right of Melbourne Football Club's Arthur Grandison. Arthur Grandison was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Irwin Schutt in the 55th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Cod Black saved Wallace from getting behind. Arthur Grandison showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cain Clubley, who was totally free with the ball in the 58th minute. Dalton Kanack kicked well hit freekick during the 58th minute of the match. After a defensive mix-up in Wallace's zone, Irwin Schutt stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Cod Black came out of the goal and Irwin Schutt tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Bishop Foley fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 68th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cod Black having to interfere. After 77 played minutes Wallace got a freekick which was hit by Jessop Fraser. Irwin Schutt blasted a shot towards the goal in the 83rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Cod Black having to make a save. Cod Black made an important save on a dangerous shot by Irwin Schutt in the 85th minute. Bishop Foley sent away a hard shot on goal in the 89th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Cod Black stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Irwin Schutt's shot from short distance in the 95th minute. In the 96th minute, Bishop Foley got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Melbourne Football Club played a much better game than Wallace and deserved their victory. The Wallace players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
