In the 3rd minute Bud Mcjenkins shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Burt Rafferty saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Bud Mcjenkins in the 6th minute of play forced Welland's goalkeeper Burt Rafferty to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 7 minutes into the match, Welland's goalkeeper Burt Rafferty had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Navin Kenack. After 22 minutes, Duffield Gannan mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Halifax and the Welland players grew even worse after the yellow card. Duffield Gannan hit a great freekick 23 minutes into the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 28th minute, Navin Kenack managed to get in a good position for a shot. Halifax's supporters rose to their feet, but Navin Kenack was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Burt Rafferty breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Gregg Laughton struck a weak shot in the 30th minute. Larry Playford didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Welland. After some fancy dribbling in the 41st minute, Bud Mcjenkins managed to get in a good position for a shot. Gregg Laughton's late challenge caught a Halifax's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Gregg Laughton helped the player get up and apologised. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Neale Bridson was the one to do the kick off. Neale Bridson received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 57th minute. Larry Playford tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in Welland's zone, Navin Kenack stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Burt Rafferty came out of the goal and Navin Kenack tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Navin Kenack received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 60th minute. Burt Rafferty tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Burt Rafferty made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bud Mcjenkins in the 61st minute of play. Welland's Neale Bridson got a good chance for a goal in the 66th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. With a little luck, Halifax's Larry Playford got control of the ball when Neale Bridson tried to sneak it across the goal line. Halifax's Larry Playford proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 76th minute of the match, managed to save Halifax from getting a goal against them. The supporters of Halifax booed when Welland was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 78 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gregg Laughton didn't get a good kick on the ball. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Halifax fans cheered their team off the field, for while Welland had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
