After 2 played minutes Sydney FC got a freekick which was hit by Hans Whitsitt. The supporters of Melbourne City FC booed when Sydney FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 6 match minutes in a wonderful position. Logan Stanton didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 7th minute of the match Rafa Cabral shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Berry Huther showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Raymond Serena recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 9th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 11 minutes into the game, Samuel Locke recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Buck Leydin. Samuel Locke showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-0. 16 minutes into the game, Dan Sedgman was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Melbourne City FC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Sydney FC the free kick. Buck Leydin showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Samuel Locke in the 18th minute of the match. In the 25th minute, Sydney FC's Hans Whitsitt ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Buck Leydin. Buck Leydin yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 2-0. Boyd Gaffigan was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 29 minutes into the match. In the 28th minute, one of Melbourne City FC:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Melbourne City FC. Buck Leydin went to the wrong direction when Jarvis Collins was taking care of the penalty kick which however missed the goal. Hans Whitsitt's late challenge caught a Melbourne City FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Hans Whitsitt helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Sydney FC getting a freekick after 32 minutes play. Hans Whitsitt hit a great ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 36th minute, Gregg Sobczak managed to get in a good position for a shot. Melbourne City FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Gregg Sobczak was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Berry Huther breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Gregg Sobczak sent away a hard shot on goal in the 39th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Melbourne City FC's Buck Leydin played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Samuel Locke in the 49th minute of play.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Rafa Cabral made a kick off. Rafa Cabral struck a weak shot in the 58th minute. Berry Huther didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Melbourne City FC. An unexpectedly hard shot by Samuel Locke in the 62nd minute of play forced Melbourne City FC's goalkeeper Buck Leydin to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 70 minutes into the game, one of Melbourne City FC:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jamie Carlisle in the 79th minute of play forced Melbourne City FC's goalkeeper Buck Leydin to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Jamie Carlisle fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 83rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Buck Leydin having to interfere. Bishop Quinane kicked well hit freekick during the 89th minute of the match. Melbourne City FC's Buck Leydin played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Raymond Serena in the 90th minute of play. The throw-in from Pete Solomon in the 94th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Melbourne City FC's Gregg Sobczak. In the 96th minute Raymond Serena shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Buck Leydin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Raymond Serena had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 97th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead.
