If Sandro Galishoff had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 14th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After having played for 18 minutes, Herve Hemeleers managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. AFC Ajax Amsterdam's supporters crossed their fingers, but Herve Hemeleers was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Sven Van Eeckhout took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jonas Nalder, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Edward Verheijt during the 24th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Austria made a substitution. Manuel Buber replaced Fabio Schneider. Herve Hemeleers who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 33rdth minute tested the skills of Fabio Auer when he managed to save the team from getting behind. 40 minutes into the game, Rudi Wigghers was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. AFC Ajax Amsterdam's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Austria the free kick. Rudi Wigghers kicked well hit freekick during the 40th minute of the match. The supporters of Austria booed when AFC Ajax Amsterdam was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 43 match minutes in a wonderful position. Herve Hemeleers didn't get a good kick on the ball. After some careless play in the Austria defense, Herve Hemeleers kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Fabio Auer. The Austria fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Fabio Auer should have stopped the shot. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-0.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Sandro Galishoff stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Austria's Manuel Buber got a good chance for a goal in the 54th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 57th minute, Emile Teunis managed to get in a good position for a shot. AFC Ajax Amsterdam's supporters rose to their feet, but Emile Teunis was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Fabio Auer breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 58th minute, Pierre-Olivier Debock got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 61 minutes into the game, AFC Ajax Amsterdam's Herve Hemeleers nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Fabio Auer made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 3-0. When Edward Verheijt was, once again, overly rough in his play he received his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. 63 minutes had been played. In the 64th match minute, AFC Ajax Amsterdam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Edward Verheijt to maneuver through the defense. A collision led to AFC Ajax Amsterdam getting a freekick after 66 minutes play. Pierre-Olivier Debock hit a great ball. In the 77th minute, Jonas Nalder hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 78 played minutes AFC Ajax Amsterdam got a freekick which was hit by Pierre-Olivier Debock. After a defensive mix-up in Austria's zone, Emile Teunis stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Fabio Auer came out of the goal and Emile Teunis tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. AFC Ajax Amsterdam's Pierre-Olivier Debock managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Sandro Galishoff in the 83 minute of the game. Manuel Buber fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 89th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Sven Van Eeckhout having to interfere. AFC Ajax Amsterdam's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
