An unexpectedly hard shot by Damir Pongrac in the 11th minute of play forced River Plate's goalkeeper Anier Benvide to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Hector Virila came free with the goalkeeper in the 12th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Ilija Skugor could save by the left post. Ilija Skugor showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Desiderio Fagildo, who was totally free with the ball in the 14th minute. After some careless play in the Croatia defense, Hector Virila kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Ilija Skugor. The Croatia fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Ilija Skugor should have stopped the shot. River Plate's Anier Benvide played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Toni Mauzer in the 19th minute of play. After 21 played minutes River Plate got a freekick which was hit by Desiderio Fagildo. 23 minutes into the match, Anier Eusko notched a goal, 2-0, to the right of Croatia's Ilija Skugor. Ilija Skugor was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. River Plate's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Toni Mauzer was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-1. Apolo Gabon could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 33rd minute of the match, but Ilija Skugor made a huge save. Hector Virila came free with the goalkeeper in the 34th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The score stood at 2-2 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half.
