An unexpectedly hard shot by Samir Menad in the 82nd minute of play forced Netherlands's goalkeeper Arnout Reekers to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Wim Wilmes might have been able to make a better finish in the 86th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Johnny van der Sar. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Wim Wilmes ran back to his position shaking his head. If Mehdi Larbes had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 88th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
