Gijsbert ter Kruimer ran back to his position shaking his head. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gustaaf Groeneveldt in the 39th minute of play forced Rapid Wien's goalkeeper Alf Tempel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If David Eikelkamp had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Arnout Reekers showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Mirco Kähler in the 44th minute of the match. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Hagedorn to make the kick off. Albert Kraft received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 50th minute. Arnout Reekers tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 52 played minutes Netherlands got a freekick which was hit by Gijsbert ter Kruimer. When Julius Reuter fell near the penalty area in the 53rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Rapid Wien's protests and gave Julius Reuter a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Netherlands booed when Rapid Wien was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 63 match minutes in a wonderful position. Uwe Kitzbichler didn't get a good kick on the ball. Netherlands's Arnout Reekers played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Albert Kraft in the 66th minute of play. Alf Tempel made a fantastic save in the 75th minute, when Wim Wilmes sent off a good shot on target. 79 minutes into the match, Wim Wilmes dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Alf Tempel, 0-3. Arnout Reekers showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Tommy Bongartz in the 82nd minute of the match. With an all-out effort, Netherlands's Alf Tempel threw himself towards the right post 86 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Gijsbert ter Kruimer, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Alf Tempel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lars Meesters in the 89th minute of play. Alf Tempel was a little too slow when David Eikelkamp got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 92nd minute. The score was now 0-4. Netherlands's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
