Hummerfiskarna's supporters crossed their fingers, but Arnaldo Queirós was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 20th minute Arnaldo Queirós shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Wilson Amorim saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of Hummerfiskarna booed when Portugal was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 21 match minutes in a wonderful position. Faustino Almeida didn't get a good kick on the ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

With an extended leg and a bit of luck Holger Mattsson prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Caetano Moreira blasted a shot towards the goal in the 96th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Holger Mattsson having to make a save.
