The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Donato Ali made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Viriato Moura in the 40th minute of play. The score stood at 1-1 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

The wind increased when Mauro Bezerra made the kick off in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Mauro Bezerra hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Musko Cuevas couldn't finish the play. Schuster made a substitution. Richy Hensmans replaced Anfilogino Pittelli. Schuster's Achille Passerini was substituted for Filiberto Paternina. Wilson Amorim showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Saul Piarres in the 70th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Mauro Bezerra in the 73rd minute of play forced Portugal's goalkeeper Wilson Amorim to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 77th minute, Saul Piarres got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 79 minutes into the match, Portugal's goal looked a bit too open when Mauro Bezerra came free, but Wilson Amorim reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 81st minute of the match Schuster got a corner. Portugal's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Saul Piarres ran over to the corner to take the kick. It was a well-played corner which Enrico Pagliarini managed to volley towards the net. Unfortunately, he didn't get a great hit on the ball and it went out into the grandstand. In the 84th minute Mauro Bezerra shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Wilson Amorim saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 85 minutes into the match, Mauro Bezerra notched a goal, 2-2, to the right of Portugal's Wilson Amorim. Wilson Amorim was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Saul Piarres scored 3-2 in the 89th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Wilson Amorim, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. The supporters of Portugal booed when Schuster was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 91 match minutes in a wonderful position. Saul Piarres didn't get a good kick on the ball. Bruno Bastos hit a great freekick 93 minutes into the match. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Schuster had won after a very even match.
