An unexpectedly hard shot by Wim Wilmes in the 30th minute of play forced The Shadows's goalkeeper Marcos Basso to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Wim Wilmes blasted a shot towards the goal in the 36th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Marcos Basso having to make a save. If Gijsbert ter Kruimer had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 46 minutes of play, Netherlands's Gijsbert ter Kruimer made it 0-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Marcos Basso was left in no man's land by his defense there! Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

In the 90th minute Gijsbert ter Kruimer shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Marcos Basso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Herbert Holmgren received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 94th minute. Arnout Reekers tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When the match was over Netherlands could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than The Shadows throughout the match.
