Wilson Amorim showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Taisto Pentsinen, who was totally free with the ball in the 9th minute. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 11th minute of the game. One of Portugal:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Manchester United FC:s goal. When Manchester United FC's Taisto Pentsinen in the 14th minute got a chance for a shot 14th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Portugal's goalie prevented a goal. Manchester United FC's Edwin van der Sar played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Felipe Barreto in the 19th minute of play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Felipe Barreto in the 21st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Edwin van der Sar saved Manchester United FC from getting behind. Edwin van der Sar made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Felipe Barreto in the 24th minute of play. In the 28th minute Felipe Barreto shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Edwin van der Sar saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The audience was convinced that Felipe Barreto's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Edwin van der Sar was relentless in the 47th minute of the game.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Viriato Moura stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The supporters of Portugal booed when Manchester United FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 50 match minutes in a wonderful position. Akseli Ilola didn't get a good kick on the ball. Felipe Barreto who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 65thth minute tested the skills of Edwin van der Sar when he managed to save the team from getting behind. In the 68th minute Valdemar Kuoppala shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Wilson Amorim saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With an all-out effort, Portugal's Edwin van der Sar threw himself towards the right post 73 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Bruno Bastos, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Wilson Amorim made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Taisto Pentsinen in the 76th minute of play. 86 minutes in the game, Viriato Moura dribbled his way through the penalty area and after maneuvering past an opponent, drilled a quick shot at the goal. The ball looked like it was going in, but it was hit a bit too hard and flew over the goal. Portugal made a substitution. Felipinho Amorim replaced Felipe Barreto. Wilson Amorim came out of the goal in the 93rd minute to try and stop a shot by Manchester United FC's Taisto Pentsinen. But to his dismay, Taisto Pentsinen quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-0. Felipinho Amorim fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 95th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Edwin van der Sar having to interfere. Portugal's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
