Viorel Olaru was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 12 minutes into the match. In the 12th minute, one of Jagiellonia Denver:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Jagiellonia Denver. Jagiellonia Denver:s Eric Gary showed great skill when he stopped Saturnino Curcio:s penalty. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Hélio Donatello in the 17th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Óscar Cordoba prevented the ball from getting in the gole. The supporters of Sporting de Gijón booed when Jagiellonia Denver was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 19 match minutes in a wonderful position. Per-Olof Åkesson didn't get a good kick on the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Matias Bilintx got free with Eric Gary in the 20th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Diego Maradona blasted a shot towards the goal in the 21st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Eric Gary having to make a save. 25 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goal looked a bit too open when Michal Majdoch came free, but Óscar Cordoba reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Through an outstanding action, after 40 minutes, Eric Gary successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. The Sporting de Gijón fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-0. In the 43rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Jagiellonia Denver's goalkeeper Eric Gary, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Cacá Čačak hit a great freekick 44 minutes into the match. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Matias Bilintx in the 45th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Eric Gary prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Eric Gary made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Diego Maradona in the 46th minute of play. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-0 at half-time.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Hélio Donatello stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 52nd match minute, Sporting de Gijón was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Diego Maradona to maneuver through the defense. Eric Gary took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Matias Bilintx, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Eric Gary showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Matias Bilintx, who was totally free with the ball in the 67th minute. In the 68th minute, Matias Bilintx left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net.
