Sonny Alén showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Siricio Liotta, who was totally free with the ball in the 5th minute. In the 11th minute, Håkan Šuker ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Flavio Vittori was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. The corner led Italy's Siricio Liotta to a score. 1-2 in the 16th minute. In the 18th minute the ball was on its way in behind Italy's goalkeeper Flavio Vittori, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. 20 minutes into the match, La Cosa Nostra's goal looked a bit too open when Zaccheo Andolina came free, but Sonny Alén reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Sonny Alén made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Sigfrido Auletta in the 22nd minute of play. Håkan Šuker could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 23rd minute of the match, but Flavio Vittori made a huge save. A sloppy throw-in by Pedro Pedroso in the 24th minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by Italy's Siricio Liotta. La Cosa Nostra's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Hans Bergfelt in the 27th minute. Elias Millrick was in a good position and managed to take a shot, but he missed just to the outside of the post. After 30 played minutes Italy got a freekick which was hit by Gomberto Picozzi. After 44 played minutes Italy got a freekick which was hit by Porziano Marchitelli. With a little luck, Italy's Flavio Vittori got control of the ball when Håkan Šuker tried to sneak it across the goal line. The La Cosa Nostra players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Italy were winning 1-2.

The wind increased when Håkan Šuker made the kick off in the second half. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Håkan Arenius during the 52nd minute. Siricio Liotta blasted a shot towards the goal in the 71st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Sonny Alén having to make a save. In the 81st minute Zaccheo Andolina shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sonny Alén saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Hans Bergfelt's late challenge caught a Italy's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card.
