If Janik Vogt had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When Frank Sachs came up free with the goalie in the 46th minute, the Germany fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Frank Sachs couldn't finish the play. Af the end of the first half the score was 3-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

The audience was convinced that Pedrinho Hoffmann's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Tommy Kahn was relentless in the 52nd minute of the game. Frank Sachs might have been able to make a better finish in the 53rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Oswaldo Paraíba. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. The Germany fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Tommy Kahn should have stopped the shot. After some fancy dribbling in the 87th minute, Hong Jian Fan managed to get in a good position for a shot. Atlético-PR's supporters rose to their feet, but Hong Jian Fan was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Tommy Kahn breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
