Gabriel Ascaso came out of the goal in the 7th minute to try and stop a shot by Brugge United's Guido Vissenaeken. But to his dismay, Guido Vissenaeken quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-0. In the 10th minute Laurențiu Roşculeţ shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gabriel Ascaso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 11th minute Brugge United were awarded a corner. Jaspar Van Den Broeck went to the cornerflag to take it. Vítor Baia made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Omar Toledo in the 12th minute of play. Spain's Gabriel Ascaso proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 13th minute of the match, managed to save Spain from getting a goal against them. Jaspar Van Den Broeck charged in rather forcefully in the 15th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Jaspar Van Den Broeck the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of Spain booed when Brugge United was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 15 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jaspar Van Den Broeck didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 22nd minute Omar Toledo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Vítor Baia saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Spain's Gabriel Ascaso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Arnauld Van Impe in the 23rd minute of play. In the 25th minute Brugge United were awarded a corner. Jaspar Van Den Broeck went to the cornerflag to take it. Jaspar Van Den Broeck made a great header on Brugge United's corner, it was just that Spain's Gabriel Ascaso managed to reach the ball for a save. Vítor Baia showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from David Aranda, who was totally free with the ball in the 30th minute. Vítor Baia showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Omar Toledo in the 31st minute of the match. Adria Bielsa sent away a hard shot on goal in the 37th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Ümit Karan's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 39thth minute, Gabriel Ascaso skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Vítor Baia took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Adria Bielsa, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The supporters of Brugge United booed when Spain was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 45 match minutes in a wonderful position. David Aranda didn't get a good kick on the ball. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.

When Ümit Karan came up free with the goalie in the 53rd minute, the Brugge United fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ümit Karan couldn't finish the play. Spain's Gabriel Ascaso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Laurențiu Roşculeţ in the 60th minute of play. Vítor Baia made a fantastic save in the 62nd minute, when David Aranda sent off a good shot on target. Waud Huijbrechts fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Gabriel Ascaso having to interfere. Omar Toledo could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 70th minute of the match, but Vítor Baia made a huge save. The crowd rose to their feet as Spain's Omar Toledo slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Vítor Baia. That made the score 2-1 after 70 minutes of play. After some careless play in the Spain defense, Ümit Karan kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Gabriel Ascaso. The Spain fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Gabriel Ascaso should have stopped the shot. Spain's Sergio Ruiz was substituted for Adria Bielsa. With his leg Vítor Baia managed to avoid a goal in the 85thth minute, when Spain's Carles Cherro fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. In the 87th minute, Guido Vissenaeken got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Sergio Ruiz who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 89thth minute tested the skills of Vítor Baia when he managed to save the team from getting behind. The home crowd let out a huge roar when the referee blew for the end of the game. Brugge United were victorious despite being under pressure from Spain for much of the match.
